Plan for the machine you actually buy
Before calculating freight, establish accurate dimensions, packed mass, lifting points, residual fluids, electrical configuration, dismantling needs and availability of loading equipment. Oversized or heavy machinery may need an open-top container, flat rack or breakbulk arrangement.
What typically affects the total landed cost?
- Machine purchase price and any refurbishment or testing.
- Domestic transport to the export location and rigging.
- Crating, corrosion protection, blocking and bracing.
- Export paperwork, origin documentation and required inspections.
- Sea freight, terminal fees, insurance, duties, tax and delivery.
- Destination unloading, installation and commissioning.
Trade terms
Terms such as FOB, CFR and CIF divide responsibilities differently. DDP transfers additional obligations to the seller, including destination import clearance and duty, which may not always be feasible. The quotation should state the Incoterms® 2020 rule and a named place when adopted by both parties.
Country-specific import requirements
Some markets restrict the import of used machinery or require conformity assessments, safety documentation or local approvals. Check the destination regulations and machine HS classification before promising shipment. A fast quote is not helpful if the machine cannot be lawfully imported or installed.
